Breath work or Pranayama in Sandskrit is the practice of breath control. Translated to Prana "life force" and Yama "practice or control" Meaning that the breath and oxygen are seen as a life giving force, or the universal energy that flows through our body.
Science shows us that proper breathing and oxygen saturation are imperative to our health and well being. Hypoxia is the term used when there is not a sufficient amount of oxygen being delivered to our tissues via the blood supply that they require to maintain proper homeostasis in a body. When this homeostasis is lost stress and anxiety are more likely to be present and harder to bring under control. Our sleep can suffer, and symptoms like chronic hypertension and pain in the tissues is more common.
Many people don't put much thought into their breathing, and are unaware of the fact that they are doing very shallow breathing just into the chest and not the whole body. Functioning in our society today has detached us from our bodies and our spirits inside.
My goal with these classes is to reeducate people on proper healthy full body breathing techniques and reintroduce them to their bodies and the powerful life force inside of us.
With a mixture of hyperventilation Pranayama techniques, and hypoventilation relaxation techniques paired with meditative practices to bring us back into the body, we can come back to a state of homeostasis to ease pain and anxiety. If you are interested in a deeper spiritual practices this is a great tool for getting to know your self, do shadow work with trauma and things that are triggering, and find a deeper connection with spirit to find your way on your path.
